The UNP will hold urgent talks on Tuesday to discuss the leadership crisis and the future of the party after 25 UNP MP’s warned that they will sit as independent MPs in Parliament if the party crisis is not settled soon.
UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera, who is among the 25 UNP MPs, told Daily Mirror online that the crisis faced by the party had gone out of control and if a solution is not found by next week then they will sit independently in parliament.
"Enough is enough. For years we have been talking about revamping the party and no one is doing anything. This is a neverending problem for all the UNP supporters and members. We urge the leader to have a quick and urgent solution," Jayasekara said.
He added, " On Wednesday we told the party leader we need to call for a meeting but he declined. We are extremely worried about this situation. I will raise this matter on Tuesday and if it is not addressed, then 25 MPs including myself will sit as independent MPs in Parliament. We have had enough," Jayasekara added.
The meeting on Tuesday will take place between UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasingha and several UNP members who have been calling for an end to the leadership crisis. The future of the organization will also be discussed during the meeting, a senior UNP MP told Daily Mirror online.
A group of prominent UNP members had on Wednesday called for an urgent meeting with Wickramasingha to discuss issues arising within the party particularly over the leadership crisis.
In a letter handed over to the Party Leader that same day the UNP members had called for the meeting to take place that very evening but the request was rejected by Wickramasingha who suggested the meeting take place next week.
The UNP members were of the opinion that one of the ways in which the leadership crisis could be settled was to create a new ‘Senior Leadership’ post within the party to which Wickramasingha should be appointed. The members had then stated that Sajith Premadasa should be appointed as the new UNP leader and Karu Jayasuriya should be retained as the Deputy Leader of the party.
Meanwhile, UNP MP John Amaratunga while confirming that the party would meet Wickramasingha on Tuesday to discuss its future said that opposition political parties and various organizations are also expected to be present during the meeting to discuss the future of the country. Ranil, this is the way you are paying for the betrayal done to the sacred land in 2002 by signing the Peace agreement with LTTE.

Who is this everybody? All government supporters and opposition pole vaulting bootlickers want Ranil out. Decent and right minded people want Ranil to remain as leader of the UNP.

Enough is enough. This is the time for drastic action. Otherwise UNP will soon be reduced to nothing and JVP or the TNA will be the main opposition, which I believe most of the country would want to avoid.

It's high time Ranil took a decision FOR the party and not in his favoiur. The MP's should have taken this move long ago to force Ranil to his senses. Otherwise Ranil will forever drag this issue UNTIL the end of him or the UNP. We have precedence from the likes of Ranil in our history: "Raja ho Ma ho Ganaga ho!"

Ranil must realise that he must go.He has failed first as a leader of the Opposition. He should have gone to the parliament on such an important day as the 18-A and debated and voted against it instead of protesting like a fool .The people are let down by him, they are trampled upon by the govt.and he is still holding on to his leadership position.
We should try Sajit. Nothing lost.He will have the bad and good of his father for sure but he can be moulded.

"All government supporters"? On the contrary, the government and their supporters would probably prefer if Ranil stays rather than replacing him with Sajith or somebody else.

Pali Friday, 10 September 2010 11:16 AM
Ranil has shown his inability to win elections. He talks to the brain and not to the heart. I think he MUST leave the leadership immediately before others leave the party. Then the majority of voters in SL (even non UNPers) will respect him at least for that action

Nimal Friday, 10 September 2010 11:29 AM
We are so sorry & disgusted as supporters of this great party....RANIL has to go...otherwise JVP the 3 rd force will become strong in the near future....we DONT want them...do something we appeal to RANIL...the only alternative is to appoint Sajith...the only hope to save this party.

But i must confess I don't know any of these people personally.

all of them knows jolly well with Ranil they will never ever win... they only support him because their survival depends on him... MR is this powerful for the simple reason RW is a weakest leader this country has ever had... even 18th amendments would not have passed if not for RW.. Please get rid of this man

I think with the current action of Ranil we should not even let him be the opposition leader. Let him be the Senior Leader. Sajit the Leader with all powers to reorganize,Dayasiri the Chief Organizer, Mangala the Media Head. UNP should work as a United Opposition with SF and JVP to send MR packing.

Wasantha Friday, 10 September 2010 07:34 AM
Under the UNP constitution change of leadership is a miracle. MP's should pass a resolution and appoint Sajith as the Leader. Then stop all the future dealings with RW. Then he will become free and can use the time to have a cup of tea with MR., who too likes gossip.

Now that the U.N.P. have go reduced to 43 M.P.s and a further 25 will sit as independents Ranil's U.N.P. group will be reduced to 18 M.P. Then they will out vote Ranil from the leader of the opposition post and appoint Sajith to that post. This will be the answer to solve the leader ship problem with in the U.N.P.There is another 5 1/2 years for the next general elections to revamp the New U.N.P. under a new leader ship.

Then we have a situation where an opposition leader without members under his command. It is high time the members appoint a new leader for the oppostion who can really challenge this regime.

Prabu Friday, 10 September 2010 08:04 AM
As long as he is the Opp leader, the Government will have a good time in the parliment. There should be a strong opp leader to deal with a strong government. RW is not strong enough to that job. He will do what ever Mangala wants him to do.

Athi Friday, 10 September 2010 08:08 AM
All democratic minded people want UNP to become a strong opposition party and rise against the formulation of anti-democratic laws. Ranil is clinging on to his position practicing un-democratic methods and has already ruined UNP. Though it will be a big challenge for the new UNP leader to resurrect UNP it can be done, if not within one year but definitely within six years. Good luck to the rebel UNP Mps.

Sue Friday, 10 September 2010 08:14 AM
You have taken the correct decision. If the UNP members are really anxious to help strengthen the party, they don't have to join the govt. They can all form an Independent party and inform everyone why they are doing it. That seems to be the only solution. Best of luck

this group is doing the right thing. may god bless them in this.Dont hang on to the shawl. Also dont tolerate your undemocratic, shameless, leader. With JVP and TNA may be you can appoint leader of opposition fresh.
My pick for the job is Dayasiri.

Typical 'Karmaya' faced by UNP for all the crimes they allowed to create & blossom out to be a 'no return back' situation for innocent people of Sri Lanka with their power hungry constitution & all evil open economy forced on all of us after 1977. its pay back time.
