The UNP has criticized the move taken by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) to support the government for constitutional reforms and is to discuss the matter next week.
UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya speaking to Daily Mirror online said that the SLMC had contested past elections under the UNP symbol and as such SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem should have consulted the UNP leadership before arriving at any decision.
HE said that the UNP will meet next week to discuss the latest developments following the SLMC backing the government for constitutional reforms. (ISA)

Hobson's choice for Hakeem. Either you support or we bribe your MPs and break your party.
The arm twisting works all the time given the quality of our MPs.

The disgusting result of Coalition Politics. Didn't the foolish and gullible UNP voters of Kandy District give their vote to this joker?

Karu has no moral right to talk about defection. Karu is solely responsible for UNP's current status and RW should not have taken him back.

SLMC claims they have the support of majority of Muslims. This was proved during the last presidential election.

If RH did not take this decision only he will remain in opposition with the UNP. The rest of SLMC members would have been bought over.

I would say all the opposition parties should join the government now and become watch dogs to keep an eye on frauds and wrong decisions instead of wasting time in the opposition.

Please give Ranil a minister post and take him into the Governement. Then UNP and all of us will have peace forever.

Clinging on to one side, no matter what, is not wise. There are people who vote UNP, just because it is 'UNP', no matter what.

UNP should support the SLMC. It is disrespectful and persecution to demand the SLMC support UNP. Our brothers should make the Govt understand the need for SLMC support.

SLMC as a separate political party has the right to make its own decisions. It's not going to make any difference whether tthe UNP discuss the issue or not.

But what is the point of being in the opposition for ever? As a party, as they claim, that stands for the rights of a section of people, no wonder they feel they need to work with the government.
5 7
Ruwan Ferdinandez Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:23 AM
During election periods, they go with their heart, often support the UNP, but other times, they have to go with their brain and work with whatever the government.
