The main opposition UNP said that they would boycott tomorrow’s swearing in ceremony of President Mahinda Rajapaksa for his second term as a mark of protest against the government’s extravagant spending in this respect.
UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told a news conference that the successive leaders starting from late Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake to former President Chandrika Kumaratunga had conducted their swearing in ceremonies in a simple and modest manner.
Mr. Jayasuriya noted that though President Rajapaksa is entitled to have ceremony, it should not be done at the cost of state coffers. (KB)
Ranjit Thursday, 18 November 2010 10:06 AM
Before that UNP(Ranil) could have boycotted invitations for talks with MR.

Sidath B Thursday, 18 November 2010 01:15 PM
I too do not agree IF MR govt has WASTED lot of money on this.
But UNP on the other hand anyway find an excuse to boycott as they have done in the past. Sri Lankans have lost their faith in total with UNP and this type of gimmick surely not the answer.

Even the US president sworn in with a simple speech where a large crowd gathered and listened to his speech. That’s all… But tomorrow we might see military parade, music and dancing parade, air force jets flying here and there, worlds largest kiribath cooked by 500 chefs, what else… should wait and see the drama

All these extravaganza are only among the government supporters but not for the poor man who is struggling make ends meet. Government should cut down on tamashas and should look after the needy.

Planting trees, opening the OPD till night are are all good. But I would have been happy if my tax money was used to relieve the suffering of the people who were displaced in the war than being wasted for the tamasha.
