The constituent parties of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) decided yesterday, at a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to bring an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, Daily Mirror learns.
It is learnt that the leaders of the constitution parties had discussed the charges to be leveled against the CJ in such an exercise.
The government had collected 118 signatures from MPs for the motion that is to be handed over to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa shortly.
Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) leader Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardane, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem, Jathika Hela Urumaya policy maker Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, EPDP leader Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda and Senior Minister Tissa Vitharana of Lankan Sama Samaja Party were among those who attended the meeting. Representing the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna, Deputy Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake and party stalwart Piyasiri Wijenayake also attended.
The Speaker can entertain an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice if it has been signed by one third of the total number of members in the House. It needs to be passed in Parliament only by a simple majority.
According to Section 107 of the Constitution, a Supreme Court or an Appeal Court Judge shall not be removed except by an order of the President made after an address to Parliament supported by a majority of the total number of MPS. (Kelum Bandara)

So, is it ONLY now these puppet leaders of the constituent parties are trying to invent some charges to get rid of CJ as wanted by their Maharajah ( MR)?
It is shame to see even the justice minister who must stand up for the CJ , conniving in this coward operation.

I believe before the impeachment motion is presented in the parliament, the speaker or the clerk should appoint a select committee representing all the parties for examination the motion. If they (select committee) agree only, then the motion can be presented. The news item has no reference to forming the select committee

May be people will teach their children not to give power of both the executive and the parliament to one part in the future.
May be our children will be lucky and not be burdened by our mistakes and democracy will be restored in their times. Then they will remember our advice and be more thoughtful in choosing their representatives.
We on the other hand, as a "generation", are done folks!!!

WE deserve this as a nation as we have become people without any backbone, Our MP's are elected to parliment by the people for them to make money and strangle theose who vote for them. WE are the most un-democratic country in the world and our stupid people deserve the treatment they get from this government as we are now a nation of butchers who thrive on murder, rape, child molestation and thuggery. Can someone please write an obituary for Sri Lanka as we will need to publish this very soon.
