UPFA wins Matara and Hambantota districts



The UPFA won the Matara and Hambantota districts by obtaining 231,102 and 174,687 votes respectively at the Provincial Council from the elections.

However, compared to last provincial council elections in 2009, the UPFA’s vote base has been reduced from 67% to 57%, while main opposition UNP was able to increase its vote base from 21.65% to 26% and JVP managed to increase its vote base from 11% to 12 %.

The two main parties, UPFA and UNP have also lost two seats and one seat respectively, while JVP was able to get one seat compared to last elections for the first time, Democratic Party led by Sarath Fonseka was able to get one seat.
