Members of the ‘University Students’ Parents Association (USPA) today urged President Mahinda Rajapaksa to help resolve the university students’ crisis.
The USPA said it was opposed to recent assault on students by a group of people who called themselves parents of university students and added that they were prepared for an open debate with any one who justified disturbances created in universities by the so-called parents. (YP)

Think positive. Why should we appose private universities & colleges? This will create opportunities to those who fail to enter state universities, effective competition and generate foreign revenue.
At present thousands of children study abroad, follow foreign courses locally and attend affiliated colleges. Country is loosing foreign exchange, not only on studies but for their living expenses as well. The issue here is, will the government do away with free education? If so students will have some justification but no government dare do this. But now it is a “storm in the teacup” for JVPs political survival. They find slogans time to time but never work towards the betterment of education or country.

Tell the parents to teach the basic responsibilities of a citizen and not to destroy the public property,If they want they can set fire to their own house.

The answer to the so called "crisis" can be found within the uni system. Stop engaging in jealous politics and use your brains to study and earn your degrees. No need for the head of state to intervene. At this rate, MR will be asked to intervene to solve husband-wife issues too : )

Naturally, when authorities dodge issues and try taking revenge instead, the parents should come forward for their children. So many irregularities in the education system, only God know who is capable of resolving this.

What now JVP wants is to give trouble to govt. Other wise they should have advised their student leaders to educate and pass exams first. Now see that Udul has failed to get through the exam 4 times and expelled from the university. Leaders should always be examples to others.

The government is already cutting down the money for local universities. It is indeed good for the ppl who have money if good private universities come to sri lanka. But for all those who do NOT have money the universities will be worse than today.

100% sure, This is JVP students parents association. And this will worsen the problem. We should see how many parents in this association. If it consist majority of students parents it is OK.

Some don'i understand anything. non of the key politicians chilldren go to sri lankan universities. they all go to foreign or private universities. So they want to form private universities in sri Lanka. This is the main issue of current situation.

As a ex student leader at Colombo Campus I see JVP Student bodies as a very low lying politically motivated envious and jelous organization. They are universities just to show the power of JVP and also to demonstrate their inferirity complexes. These so called "Peeditha Panthiya" representatives have no knowledge of how poor students are suffering as they are the people who organize most brutal ragging sessions.I wish and hope that minister S.B will be able to crush these organizations and expel all students who try to disrupt education of others as university should be a peaceful place to do studies and research and not revolutions or ragging.Am not an ardent supporter of SB but I appreciate what he has done so far and would like to express my gratitude for him for doing such a thing.

Why not making a plan to eliminate JVP lead students unions from all universities first. All parents, teachers and university employees must come forward first to resolve this problem. We were able to eliminate LTTE terrorists. Now it is time to free our uni students from JVP terrorists.

All Sri Lankans should unite and boot the JVP once and for all. These clowns have done nothing productive but create trouble for Sri Lanka since day one.

SB should not lose his ministry. He is one rare person who will call a spade a spade (while talking other nonsense, at times, of course). And he is one politico with a back bone who can stand up to these agitators. If he has his way, wewill have a great higher education system, with worldclass universities, both local and foreign. There will be little space for shady outfits to con Sri Lankan parents out of their money on the promise of foreign degrees. Good education harms no one. That is what these student jokers cannot understand. And it isgreat that he got lots of scholarships for local students from the foreign universities that will be established. talented kids can now get a world class education. No need to have richparents. goodenough to get good marksat A/Ls. Isnt that great? That makes the job market more even for the talented young people who cant afford travel to foreign lands (not to mention go to totally unknown universities that no one recognizes).

Born yesterday Ruwan? Ignorance may be blissfor you and the JVP. But for poor parents who send kids to university and forstudents who work whilestudying just so they can get a degree are being harmed. And it hurts for us to watch this happenning. Iam from the 1988 batch A/L who never went to university coz JVP troubles kept it closed and there was a long wait to enter uni. So I became a professional instead. thanks to my parents who could afford it. I still thank the JVP for that. But most young undergrads do not have such choices. So talk some sense.
See Kasun below. he wrote in Sinhala. But its all true. Ideas are good regardless of the language. And such talent will be lost if we allow JVP to mess up young people;s lives.
All adults should be ashamed to mess up young lives.

Yes, sadly a few ignorant or clueless people who are brainwashed into believing JVP offers solutions to their problems will be on their side. Sri Lankans are not exactly all known for logical decision making, you know. :(

What all forget is that this is TAX PAYER funds that are wasted by students engaging in nantional level politics!
A student union as in universities abroad should strictly be just that.
We have our education free upto A level,we have free university without fees and we take all this for GRANTED !

You can say that again! Heh! Heh!! so-called parents, so-called students!! How can a person who has been expelled from a university after flunking his exams for four year be a student leader? He is surely jealous of other students who are sucessful in their exams.

These students are 18+ year old hardened JVP terrorists, who killed 100,000+ innocent people including members of forces from 1971 to 1989.
What parents !
They are not under parental control, their parents are under their control.
SB/GR/Mervyn give them the medicine they deserve.
Remove all the teeth of the fialed dental student UDUL.
God bless Srilanka post LTTE

Yes it is the JVP who need rehabilitating completely. The JVP should be banned from aproaching any parents of students or students themselves. The JVP has gone so low to misinform these poor parents who now believe their kids are doing an important duty by protesting. We need a good programme to educate these poor parents otherwise if they are on the students' side, that will lead to disaster.

These parents should be ashamed of the activities of the University Students..the so-called university student who was supposed to have been assualted should not have been in that crowd first of all...and ofcourse a person similar to him was seen on photographs a couple of days after the incident with the notorious Udul Premaratne! These so called parents should make a statement denouncing all the assualts and insults heaped on the Minister and other authorities including the Vice-Chancellors before talking about this one incident. And I do not think the President of Sri Lanka should waste his time listening to these JVP hooligans until they come clean and assume their studies.
