The donation of the five-year-old baby elephant named ‘Dinuda’ to a private zoo in South Korea has been halted on the intervention of President Mahinda Rajapakse.

The baby elephant was to be handed over to the South Korean zoo today. Minister S.M.Chandrasena said the President had ordered the immediate suspension of the donation.

‘Dinuda’ is considered special as it was born on Victory Day (May 18, 2009). (Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa)

Ban exporting elephants from Sri Lanka for any purpose. They are highly social animals and to keep them in isolation in strange environment and away from their habitat bring nothing but misery. What a way to live, shackled threatened and torture with bullhook, that bring physical and psychological pain and suffering, all through life time.
