JVP MP Vijitha Herath was detained in Vavuniya this morning while he was on his way to Kilinochchi, the JVP media unit said. He was detained together with former Presidential candidate Channa Gamage who is supporting General Sarath Fonseka.
When contacted by Daily Mirror online Mr. Herath confirmed that he was at the Vavuniya police station. He was later released after being questioned by the police. (ISA & YP)

This is a free country and we believe SF military leadership liberated the north from the LTTE. So why do anyone need a reason to go anywhere in Sri Lanka. That is the freedom that the Sri Lankan security forces with SF leadership and the leaders of SLAF and SL Navy have earned for all Sri Lankans.

Vijitha Herath claimed that he and his companions were not arrested, but were detained which delayed their journey. They were travelling to the North to monitor the election proceedings on behalf of the SF camp. There were no army deserters or rioters in the bus that they travelled.

Why can’t they travel anywhere they want to? If there are other reasons for their arrest, people need to know about it. The above comments like “What was he doing there” are extremely juvenile and unrefined…

I think you are the stupid one and off your nut. You are like an empty vessel making a big noise without even knowing the reason why. People can travel to any part of the country as long as they are not going to violate the peace and the people's right to vote. This moron Herath was going with a group of army deserters to assault SF supporters & put the blame on the government.

What on earth?, this maybe Stage acted, After all, what else can you expect?,Politicians need to do something rather Intriguing, 98% of the population are extremely, Gullible ,foolish and absolutely Idiotic, Sri Lankan Politicians are experts at bringing in confusion for their advantage and the people fall for it, 60+ years of suffering yet the Population never learns.

At least be questioned as his electorate is way back in Gampaha. He has not even used his vote to be there in Vavunia in the morning

Wijitha Herath is not a party Leader. His electorate is in Gampaha. Not Vauniya. First talk sense without talking crap!

Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:42 AM
Wijitha Herath would have done better had he stayed in his electorate in Gampaha. He is in Vavuniya early in the morning means that he has not even cast his vote in Gampaha. So what's the big hurry in him not even using his voting rights? something very fishy

Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:46 AM
This is the master plan of SF and his goons, his private army of deserters and the JVPers.... what was the reason to be in Vavuniya so early in the morning? To give leadership for anarchy? time to take a stand against

i seriously don't get it... why are people trying so hard to get their hinds kicked?? those supporting the current govt. are either...
a.) Have ulterior motives, some form of gain at the expense of the majority of this country
b.) Are short sighted.
c.) Plain dumb.
d.) All of the above
We KNOW the amount of corruption in the present government, we KNOW how much of thuggery is going on and how no one.. NO ONE who dares speak against it don't live too long... We don't really have a clear idea as to what will happen if Sarath Fonseka comes into power..but those who haven't cast their vote.. think again... we really could do with a change... NO ONE should remain too powerful THIS long... wanna be broiler chicken ?

Some of these comments are ridiculous. If he was arrested for a valid reason, i.e. For breaking the law, all good and well. But why should he have to have a reason for being in Vavunia? To use that reasoning, any MP govt or opposition found outside his polling division must be detained!

I am not knowledgeable of the person in question, but if he is a citizen he should be able to travel anywhere in the country. If he is accused of a crime or suspected of one...fine, detain him; but the media should report a basic reason for his detention.

what the he is doing in Vavuniya...defenitely ellection rigging. He was from Binila and went to school in Bandarawela. Then came to Gampaha for the election. Now in North for rigging.
