United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has told the Norwegian media that Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa assured him he would do his best to ensure that the human rights of the Tamil people would be protected and promoted and all measures would be adopted to see that justice prevailed.
Mr. Ban told the Norwegian media in Oslo, that he had been “waiting and waiting” till the Sri Lankan government responded positively to the implementation of recommendations by the UN experts’ panel report.
He is in Oslo where he attended the Norwegian Government hosted International Climate and Energy Summit that opened on Monday.
Mr. Ban said the experts’ panel he had set up had reviewed all these situations and made several recommendations.
“These recommendations need to be implemented by the Sri Lankan government. I have been waiting and waiting until the Sri Lankan government responded positively to the implementation of the recommendations,” he said. “Just a couple of weeks ago I decided to refer this report to the Human Rights Council and my High Commissioner for Human Rights and they are now reviewing this Panel of Experts Report. I met President Rajapaksa just two weeks ago on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly and we discussed this matter. He assured me he would do his best to ensure the human rights of all his Tamil People are protected and promoted and will adopt all domestic measures to see that justice prevails.”
