The Frontline Socialists Party today refuted a government officials statement made to the effect that there is no documentary evidence of Kumar Gunarathnam arriving in the country.
The former Propaganda Secretary of the Movement for Peoples Struggle Waruna Rajapakshe told Daily Mirror online “Gunarathnam was born in Kegalle and studied and St. Mary’s College after which he was a student of the Engineering Faculty at the Peradeniya University, A senior government official had said that Kumar was not in Sri Lanka, but we are telling him that he was with us, he spoke to us and lived with us. We have all relevant proof. The official had also asked for the passport, we don’t know where the passport is but it must be with the official because the first photograph that was released to the media of Kumar was the photograph on his passport. The abductees have taken away all the documents including the computer storage device, so we believe that all of this must be in the possession of the government which is why he is asking us to show it,” he said.
When queried as to why the wife of Kumar Gunarathnam who was detained in January denied the existence of her husband Rajapakshe said that one has to consider the frame of mind of a woman who was interrogated for ten hours not knowing the fate of her two children. “ I don’t know what she said because I don’t have the transcripts but whatever she said it must have been circumstantial. She was trying to provide security to her husband and her children, she was interrogated for 10 hours and her children were also not with her. Whatever she said must have been to make sure that no harm befalls her husband” he said.
Commenting further on the JVP continuous denial of the existence of the Kumar Gunarathnam he said that he doesn’t want to dabble in politics at this juncture. “I don’t know the reason why the JVP said this, but I don’t want to dabble in politics when we are faced with such a grave situation. All I can say is that from the time I was involved with the JVP Kumar was an integral part of it. There not a place on this country that Kumar hasn’t walked and every member who was with the JVP knows it, their conscience would know who Kumar is” he said. (Hafeel Farisz)
