Notorious drug trafficker Wele Suda’s wife and mother-in-law who had been detained by the Colombo Narcotics Bureau for allegedly aiding and abetting the trafficking of 85 kilogrammes of heroin valued at more than Rs.6.8 million were released by Mahara Additional Magistrate Mahinda Prabhath Ranasinghe as the Narcotics Bureau had said there were no charges against them.
The two suspects were released by the additional magistrate on submissions made by the Narcotics Bureau. They reported to court that eight suspects had been taken into custody in connection with the racket and detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. They informed court that two of the suspects were released during the preliminary investigations.
Narcotic Bureau officials told court that they would not proceed with the case against the two women and moved for their release.
Attorney Anura Seneviratne who appeared for the suspects said the officers of the Narcotics Bureau were in the habit of implicating innocent individuals in drug trafficking cases to gain undue publicity. He submitted that the officials had meted out serious injustice to these two suspects.
