Weliweriya Temple attack: Suspects out on bail



The seventeen suspects who had been arrested in connection with an attack on Sabhawa Temple at Uruwala, Malwathuhiripitiya in Weliweriya were released by the Gampaha Magistrate today, the Police said.

One person, who was injured in the incident, had been admitted to Gampaha General Hospital.

The Temple was attacked by an armed gang Friday night.

The Chief Incumbent of the Temple and member of the Mahara Pradeshiyia Sabha Ven. Yagoda Seevali Thera said a large crowd of about 150 people stormed the temple and caused extensive damages to the building, his motorcar and three other vehicles of visitors to the temple.

The relatives of the suspects who gathered at the Gampaha Police Station however said a group of individuals was performing exorcism at the temple and that even fowls had been brought for sacrifice.

They alleged the villagers prevented it.

Meanwhile, the Jathika Hela Urumaya denounced the attack and urged the authorities to take action against those responsible for the attack.(Tilak Nimalasuriya and W.D.M.vithanage)
