A total number of 2.4 million vehicles have been imported to Sri Lanka from 2015 to 2020 costing the nation a staggering Rs. 1,337.57 billion, State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyabalapitiya told Parliament today.

Responding to an oral question raised by MP Premnath C. Dollawatte in the House that Sri Lanka had collected a revenue of Rs. 991.12 billion in the form of import duty from 2015 to 2020.

He said those vehicles have been imported from 68 countries.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Hard to believe that many motorised vehicles were imported. How many of the 2.4 million , which includes motorcycles are still working, or is this some deceit by the Minister. Are spare parts of 2.4 million the reality.

New vehicles don’t need spares other than running spares for at least 7 years. These are RMV and customs stats. When one sees the number of new plates on the roads- this seem understated. Many people who don’t have a house of their own have vehicles. Most have multiple vehicles. Take a hike on the roads see the number of mobiles! They use mobikes to travel 200 meters to grab a loaf of bread. That’s the level of mobility in SL

The solution is to have mass transport like in Singapore. Metro run by electricity covering all major suburbs and roads. Plus a good intercity train service . Then people do not need too many cars. Thereafter, increase car tax so that those who still want a car can pay and have it.

How can the import cost the nation? Importers pay duty plus tax plus CESS in addition to the price of the vehicle and handling and clearing charges.

Freeze all vehicles. Import only replacements with only VAT. Use the Singapore system.

The government collected revenue by various taxes and duty for imports as a trade off for spending dollars. The reason for going bankrupt is not vehicle imports alone. Borrowing beyond our ability to payback.
