A new start to end the ragging culture in universities?

A group of 263 students of the Karapitiya medical faculty of the Ruhunu University were forbidden entry into the faculty for causing inconvenience to the freshers during a recent ceremony to welcome them.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena said a group of second year students of the medical faculty were forbidden entry into the medical faculty.

He said the students had arbitrarily removed the address of the Dean of the Faculty from the agenda and compelled the new students attending the ceremony to be dressed in an attire dictated by them.

The male students had been ordered to be dressed in shirt, a long pair of trousers and tie and the female students were forced to be dressed in Sari and had to have makeup done at a beauty parlour.

Prof. Amarasena said the new entrants were not in a position to bear the expenses of costumes and make up at beauty parlours as instigated by the seniors in view of the prevailing economic constraints.

He pointed out that the group of senior students concerned had violated the consensus reached between them and the university administration not to cause any inconvenience to new entrants.

The vice chancellor said a formal investigation of the incident would be held and that drastic disciplinary action would be taken against them.

He said he would not hesitate to expel them from the university if found guilty of ragging. (Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)
