Appointing politician to CB will create bad image on SL’s economy: Anura

The move to appoint a politician to the Central Bank Governorship, which was an internationally recognised independent institute, would create a bad image on the country and its economy at the international level, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.

He told a news conference that it was inevitable that Sri Lanka would be considered a black economy as laws were drafted to allow money laundering in the country and a politician is taking over the Central Bank.

He said Ajith Nivard Cabraal suffered a huge dent to his reputation globally due to his involvement in Greek Bond incident, Hedging agreement and swindling millions of rupees through a programme to boost country’s image in the US and added that appointing such a person as the CB Governor, would create even a worse image of country’s economy than today.

Responding to a question, he said there were no legal provisions to appoint Cabraal as the CB Governor with ministerial powers and that there were stipulated powers and duties to the post of CB Governor.

Mr. Dissanayake said numerous state officials quit their posts recently and added that only the government servants who were acting on the wrong decisions of the Government could remain in their positions.

“Director General of the Department of National Zoological Gardens Ishini Wickramasinghe, several medical experts of the Covid task Force and the Central Bank Governor resigned from their posts. Only the persons who are ready to act on wrong decisions of  the Government can remain in their seats today,” he said.(Ajith Siriwardana)
