Three elephants died last night after being knocked down by a speeding train on the Batticaloa-Trinco-Colombo railway line near the Hatares Kotuwa area between Habarana and Gal-Oya stations, the Railway Department said.

They said the intercity train 'Pulathisi' which knocked the animals to death, derailed after the accident took place early this morning.

The train had left the Batticoloa railway station at 1.30 am and met with this tragedy at 5.05 am near the Hatares Kotuwa area. The locomotive and another carriage were derailed following the incident.

As a result, trains on the Batticoloa-Colombo line have been suspended temporarily, and repair work to the track is now in progress, the railway department further said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

The locomotive drivers of the Sri Lanka Railway sleep at the cab when driving. The also take alcohol. A few questions, how old was the drivers, how long has be driven this locomotive, how lo ng has he been operating trains on the route. He needs to be charged for negligence. The British drivers (Suddas) operated these train and no such incidents have been recorded to my knowledge.

The Minister is always talking about too many elephants when the data is showing there are now more elephants dying than ever. The MPs can't be trusted, and the top officials often their lackeys are often worse, covering up their Minister bosses crimes, or assisting for commission agreements too.
