The cabinet ministers had agreed to import eggs to control the local market price.Trade Minister Nalin Fernando has submitted the proposal to the cabinet meeting this evening.

Meanwhile, the All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association (ACBOA) last Saturday said the eggs could be imported as a temporary measure to control the escalating prices and that it would be a solitary solution to the ongoing egg crisis.

The association said after importing eggs, they could be sold at Rs. 30 each.

He said that eggs could be imported from neighbouring countries such as India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Now they will say that imported eggs are - inferior, causes infertility, etc. Etc. Same thing they say for rice, milk etc. End of the day- the uneducated folk will spend more and consume local junk. Good move! Can't wait till the goods arrive.

In 1948 when Sri Lanka was finally freed of 450 years of European captivity , we got the chance to throw away all the restrictions put in place by the Europeans and make a fresh start for our country. But we didn’t do anything to change , we kept the Christian schools that produced half baked intellectuals who thought being conquered and ruled by foreign forces was a good thing for Sri Lanka, we kept the disloyal and dangerous up country Indian Tamils to remain in Sri Lanka when Sri Lankans should have taken over the tea and rubber production completely, we were so fascinated to see the partially naked white women lying in our beaches, we allowed a major part of our economy to be based on this free striptease, and we were so thrilled by the Europeans saying “you have a beautiful country” instead of they should have been reluctantly saying “ you are producing the best card or the best medicines “; we simply wasted the last 74 years. And now we don’t even have enough eggs to feed.

A more efficient govt would have acted 3 months ago when farmers warned of shortage of day old chicks and arranged for the importation of chicks and feed rather than using the dollars now to import eggs. 73 year Olds lacking basic common sense.

Why the trade minister and the cabinet not making necessary steps to increase egg production!???! This country went Bankrupt because SL imported everything from SALT to all crap!! We, for the first time in the history ran out of dollars aka BOP crisis!! What the hell the Politicians doing!! What The Hell those so called "Think Tanks" doing !??? Among the world Politicians we've the highest number of Politicians with Doctorates!! And bureaucrats too!!

lol. Nalin was trying this almost he became the minister from day one itself as he is a close friend of Kurunegala Jonny the previous egg importer. This is an utter waste of dollars just to buy food cheaply. Instead that money should be used to import things like medicine. Media should find the culprits and reveal each one of them. Nalin should be forced to step down as he is kind of a broker rather than a genuine guy.

If anyone thinks that an imported egg can be sold locally for Rs 30 they don't have a clue of what the import cost would be. My estimate will be around Rs 40 or 45 at the least, for an imported egg in the local market.
