Circular prohibiting teachers’ private tutoring withdrawn

Colombo, December 24 (Daily Mirror) - The circular issued by the Western Province Education Zonal Ministry prohibiting private tutoring classes for students by school teachers, along with the letter issued by the Education Ministry regarding modulators, has been withdrawn, Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe said.

Addressing the media, he said that the cancellation of the circular and the modulator letter was necessary as certain officials seemed intent on deliberately creating inconvenience for the government.

"If that is the case, we will directly intervene to protect the government," Jayasinghe said.

He urged the officials to abandon outdated work practices and collaborate with the government to lead the country in a fresh and progressive direction.

Parliamentarian Mahinda Jayasinghe questioned whether banning tuition should be the first priority for teachers. Among the various issues that need to be addressed for teachers, they face challenges such as salary anomalies, transfer policies, promotions and difficulties in obtaining salary increments.

You can’t ban the private tuition it is a basic freedom of people and parent if they have money and if they children want to do it why not ? 90% of school teachers are not teaching well: Please do something for that : Once school teachers are trained well to do their jobs we you can see if this is needed or not Now please leave it like that Private tuitions have done some positive and negative things Some exploit some parents but many do good work and some do free of charge It is good for some poor children as well some good private tuition providers do good: helping poor children and buy them books and stationeries : Positive thing overweight the negative things But ask them to charge less money from poor children or fix a tuition fees for all The government should regulate the private tuitions Tax them and keep them monitored: Digitally control them: how do you do it ? Think about it ?

It is good that the govt is sensitive to how the public feels and responds, it must be a very complex issue with good and bad points ,will have to improve schools and that again won't be easy, will take time and resources

Leaving politics aside, it was a good directive. Room should be left for teachers to tutor a few students in their free time, but not mass tuition classes as being practiced. The burden on parents who are financially challenged is extreme.

one thing is clear. The government will not be able to make any significant changes to the existing practices in the country. Simply, those who argue for a change are the ones who block such changes. It is very obvious that school teachers earn handsomely from private tuition by teaching to the same kids after the school hours. teachers accept anything as a gift. these practices have become normal. After accepting such goodies, teachers/principals treat only to the students from whom they are benefited. This fellow came to power by getting support from teachers. So he wants to maintain the status quo. This is what has happened. Doctors do not want to change anything. university academic will not let government to do any change. All protect their privileges while public suffer. Very soon we will see that trade unions govern the country.

Private tuition is helpful to make the less confident in the formal system of education ...the vulnerable student is hopeful , feel that they are ahead of others .This attitude of getting ahead has been taken to the lands our people migrated too so parents tell me .....and no law can fix it .its is ingrained into the minds of the parents and is a copy cat situation ,.even if the child comes first class room performance parents fear the unseen leaders who will overtake their prodigy at public exams . one to one tutoring is different ..but lecture halls can be counter productive ..but affordable .Cannot blame the TEACHERs alone for other professionals do so after hours....I was one teacher who did my best in the classroom , may be poorer than most others but it was my choice ..no preaching ...

What a joke. A student who is taught in school from one teacher should not be getting classes after school hours from the same teacher. As Mahesh mentioned this creates favouritism towards the students that have more to offer to the teacher in terms of compensation. You want to end corruption, but seems to be keeping practices that encourage corruption as long as it keeps your supporters happy.

It's a known fact that tuition is a real burden on parents income. It has become an obvious fact that these people are unable to fulfill what they promised before grabbing power. They were the voice of poor people of this country. If so, try to eliminate tuition mafia instead of supporting it. Not all tuition teachers are qualified.

they get government salary and do a cheap low quality job, and do tuition as a top priority...government schools standard is low...there has to be a transparent, merit based system in education, medicine etc...

Why is prohibition of private tuition by government teachers to their own school kids not a priority? What is the reason for this back tracking? Even parents whose children goes for private tuition knows, in their heart of hearts, that it is a form of queue jumping over the under privileged children who just cannot afford the tuition fees. Private tuition decides kids' future depending on who is rich and who is poor. As a result, even a naturally gifted kid will be condemned to a bleak future for want of money. It is the duty of a responsible government to ensure a level playing field for ALL kids irrespective of their parents' wealth.

Tuition lords helped to bring NPP into power so they will not change that. They will let these tuition lords to continue to mint money from poor students. These JVP NPP guys were protesting private universities to protect free education but there is no free education in Sri Lanka.
