Controversial Chinese ship Yuan Wang 5 in Hambantota only for refueling and other facilities - Minister
Under no circumstances would Sri Lanka act detrimental to the interests of India or China as both nations have been Sri Lanka’s friends-in-need and have stood alongside Sri Lanka at all times, Minister Bandula Gunawardana said.
He said that the purpose of the Chinese research vessel Yuan Wang 5 which is expected to berth at the Hambantota International Port on the 11th of August was refueling and replenishing of other facilities and provisions.
“The ship or members of its crew will not involve in any internal affairs or business in Sri Lanka. China and India have always helped Sri Lanka domestically and in the international forums as true friends. Therefore, Sri Lanka would not do anything to harm the good understanding and trust existing between the two countries for millennia,” Minister Gunawardana stressed.
Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, has briefed both countries at diplomatic levels about the situation that has developed with the intended sailing of the research ship Yuan Wang 5 to Hambantota, he added. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)
