DMT allows tuk-tuks to modify at a cost



The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) today granted permission allowing three-wheelers to have certain appliances fitted to trishaws, such as decorations, etc., DMT Commissioner General Nishantha Anurudda Weerasinghe said.

The permission was granted based on continuous discussions with three-wheeler associations and according to the Motor Traffic Act.

The permission came into effect on Monday (10).

Accordingly, DMT allows the modification of three-wheelers under thirty categories with a maximum charge of Rs. 2,500 and a minimum of Rs. 500, which some of the categories come under, without a payment.

Rs. 2500 will be charged to modify the single-light main lap to a dual-light system and to modify their windscreen.

Rs. 1,000 will be charged to fix LED lamps instead of the Tungston lamps, to fix wind deflectors, to make modifications using fiber, and to upgrade the brake system.

Rs. 2,000 will be charged to fix additional stainless steel modifications.

Rs. 500 will be charged for the external fixing of a muffler and adding side mirrors.

However, five other categories were mentioned that allowed modifications without payments. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
