Damage to crops from wild animals estimated up to Rs.54 billion a year: Amaraweera



According to the estimates made by the Agriculture Ministry, it has been confirmed that crop damage caused by wild animals in Sri Lanka is approximately Rs. 54 billion per year, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

He said the animals that cause the most damage to crops are wild elephants, peacocks, jackals, and wild boars. Among the said animals, six animals other than wild elephants have been included in the list of animals that cause crop damage. 

These facts were revealed following a report released by the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agricultural Research and Training Institute about crop damage caused by wild animals.
