Dr. Shihabdeen not acquitted from charges against him: Ven. Rathana

Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen attached to the Kurunegala Hospital has not been acquitted from all charges against him even though he was reinstated by the Health Ministry, Parliamentarian Athuraliye Rathana Thera said today.

Ven. Rathana Thera told a news conference that the case against Dr. Shihabdeen was ongoing and that the Magistrate’s Court had observed that there was sufficient evidence against him.

The prelate said there was a wrong opinion among the people that Dr. Shihabdeen had been acquitted from all charges and it was completely incorrect.

“He was remanded for two months because there was evidence against him,” he said.

Ven. Rathana Thera said the report, consisting of evidence of some 1,200 mothers, Director and the staff of the Kurunegala Hospital was not sent to the Public Service Commission by the Health Ministry so far.

“It has not been sent by the health ministry under this government and the previous government as well. It is a serious offence. Steps should be taken to interdict Dr. Shihabdeen and the former and the current health ministry secretaries for not sending the report to the PSC. The Health Ministry should bear responsibility for the incident,” he said.

The prelate said they would not allow room to put this incident under the carpet and that they would intervene in the case.

He said the President should get down the report of the Kurunegala Hospital and get the intelligence services to ascertain whether the allegations against Dr. Shihabdeen were credible or not.(Ajith Siriwardana)
