Ex-SriLankan official’s extradition sought

The extradition of a former SriLankan Airlines official, convicted of sexually harassing a former employee in India, has been sought through a petition filed in a Delhi court.

The Complainant’s lawyer Advocate Ajay Verma told Daily Mirror that a submission was made that the convict has absconded and that extradition proceedings be initiated against him.

Metropolitan Magistrate -5, of the Patiala House Court, New Delhi, Ms. Taranpreet Kaur has decided to consider the case on December 24, 2022.

Verma told Daily Mirror that he will be pushing for the extradition of Lalit D’Silva, the Former Regional Manager (India) of SriLankan Airlines.

In September 2020, a Delhi Court ordered the conviction of Lalit D’Silva on the charge of outraging the modesty of a female employee.

The accused had however argued that he had been falsely implicated in the case by the complainant when she had failed to get herself transferred back to the Delhi Station from Cochin where she was transferred by the company. (Easwaran Rutnam)

Being a Regional Manager, he thought that he is in charge of the region, but in reality he was in charge of region allocated to Sri Lankan Airline.

In all judiciarys the punishment is carried out at the location of the crimes. Extradition will create problems of burden of providing witnesses where the accused is at an undue advantage. Most offenders get away with crimes due to hesitation of the complaints facing trials.Arab judiciarys have a more practical method of deciding on the accused guilt they will be first subjected to humiliation of publicly punishing and then Extradition to homelands. Most guilt will be decided by the judge himself even without evidences, human rights activists may argue inhumane. To obide by the law of the land is the utmost purpose of a judiciary, often severe punishments are applied as a deterrent to others.

These are the type of employees who are mostly former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa's close friends and kith and kin who were recruited for top Government postings overseas. They were not even qualified enough to do the job as well as of bad character brniging so much shame to Sri Lanka.
