The excavations at Puthukudiirippu in Mullaitivu to retrieve gold suspected to be buried by the LTTE during the war commenced yesterday as per a court order.
However, the excavations had to be postponed until today due to inclement weather and technical faults, police said.
The excavations commenced yesterday at a coconut estate in the Sudanthirapuram area with the assistance of the Police and the STF under the supervision of Mullaitivu Magistrate.
Investigations were launched to retrieve gold following a tip-off received by the Puthukudiirippu Police that there was gold buried in the area by the LTTE.
Earlier, the CID had launched an investigation into two coordinating secretaries of cabinet ministers Sarath Weerasekera and Douglas Devananda, who had allegedly tried to recover the gold allegedly buried in the site.
It was reported they were secretaries to the Minister of Public Security and the Minister of Fisheries. (Romesh Madushanka)
