Former minister dies after elevator at home collapses



Former Minister of Health Dr. P.N.B. Cyril died last night after a temporary elevator installed outside his home to attend to repairs to the third floor of the building at Siribopura in Hambantota, collapsed with the minister and his driver inside. 

Police said the former minister who received serious injuries was admitted to the General Hospital, Hambantota and later transferred in critical condition to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. 

The driver who received injuries was admitted to General Hospital, Hambantota. 

Investigations revealed that the former minister with his driver was inspecting the ongoing repairs to the building when the elevator had collapsed.

The 89-year-old former minister entered politics in 1977 and successfully contested the Tissamaharama seat under the UNP banner. (Dileep Jayasekara)
