GMOA to launch islandwide strike tomorrow

The Government Medical Officers Association has decided to launch an islandwide trade union action from 8.00 am tomorrow over seven demands, GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr Samantha Ananda said.

He told Daily Mirror that emergency services at all hospitals would not be disrupted during the time of the strike while the strike would not affect the functions at maternity hospitals, children's hospitals, Cancer Hospital, Maharagama.

The strike action would be carried over demands including compiling the appointment lists of specialist doctors without the approval of the statutory medical transfer boards, failure to publish the 2022 Annual Transfer List, failure to issue the Gazette notification regarding the election of the office bearers of the Sri Lanka Medical Council and violation of National Salary Policy.

"However, there won't be any disruption to the services related to COVID-19 including vaccination and treatment as well," Dr Ananda added.

The GMOA today launched a 24-hour token strike in five districts in protest of the arbitrary move by Secretary to the Ministry of Health to grant post internship appointments. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
