Govt. approves extending fully electric vehicle imports up to Sept. 15



 

 

The government today approved extending the period for foreign exchange remittances made by Sri Lankan expatriates working overseas in order to obtain a vehicle permit, Cabinet spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardana said.

He said the government approval was earlier granted to implement the scheme to issue permits to import fully electric vehicles, with the objective of encouraging the expatriate workers to remit their earnings through legal channels.

"The resolution furnished by the Labour and Foreign Employment Minister to extend the period considered for remitting foreign exchange to the country in order to obtain a vehicle permit under the said scheme up to September 15, 2023," he said.

Accordingly, the amount of foreign exchange remitted to by expatriate workers during the period from May 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022 are eligible to import an electric vehicle, the Minister said.

However, it is apparent that they are not eligible to import the said vehicles according to their desire with the volume of foreign exchange they have remitted during the aforementioned period, he said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
