Govt. decides to close down some SL missions

The Government has decided to close down some Sri Lanka missions as a means of cutting down expenditure, State Minister of Regional Relations Taraka Balasuriya informed Parliament today.

“There are around 65 Sri Lanka foreign missions abroad, and we have seen that some of these missions are not needed as Sri Lankan mission offices of countries close by can handle matters rather than having too many mission offices. “This will also save funds,” he said, responding to a question raised by Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella in the House last morning.

Mr. Kiriella questioned whether Sri Lankan diplomatic offices in some countries are closed because of the FOREX issue. Sri Lankan missions in Norway, Iraq and Cypress. There are 10,000 Sri Lankans in Cypress,” he said. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
