Isipathana College held off a second half fightback from S. Thomas' College to record a bonus point win in the Under 19 Inter School Rugby League tournament in Mount Lavinia, while D. S. Senanayake College, St. Joseph's College and Zahira College also chalked up wins.
Isipathana comfortably led 17-03 at half-time, scoring two converted tries and a penalty, while S. Thomas' put over a penalty.
The Thomians roared back in the second half, with two converted tries and penalty, but a two tries, one of which were converted and another penalty ensured that Isipathana started their title defence with two wins out of two games.
A solitary penalty was the difference between St. Joseph's Colege and Wesley College, as their match at the Royal Sports Complex ended in a 3-0 win for St. Joseph's College.
In another match played in Colombo, Royal College beat Science College 45-10 at Science College Grounds, bouncing back from their opening day defeat to St. Peter's College.
In Kandy, D. S. Senanayake College fended off St. Anthony's College 23-19 to record their first win of the season..
D. S. Senanayake held a 08-05 at half time, and despite St. Anthony's putting on an improved second half, D. S. Senanayake had enough in store to complete their first win of the season.
Elsewhere, Zahira managed to pull off a close 18-15 win over Dharmaraja in their rugby encounter which concluded at Bogambara Stadium.
All the points were scored in the first half, with fullback Mohamed Saad socring 13 of Zahira College's 18 points, as his team ran in two tries, one which was unconverted, and two penalties, while Dharmaraja, who opened the season with a shock win over Trinity College, managed an uncoverted try,
