Lawyers urge Attorney General not to interfere with the judiciary

A group of lawyers today staged a protest in front of the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court in Hulftsdorp condemning the Attorney General's alleged interference with the judiciary.

The lawyers staged a protest during lunch hour condemning Attorney General's attempts to prevent Colombo Additional Magistrate Tharanga Mahawatte from hearing the case filed against Convener of Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) Wasantha Mudalige and Ven. Galwewa Siridhamma Thera.

Attorney-at-law Gunaratne Wanninayake told the media that the Lawyers Association attached to the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has taken a decision condemning the conduct of the Attorney General for exerting undue influences to the judiciary through affidavits.  Wanninayake said they would collectively defeat any attempt against the independence of the judiciary.

He said the Magistrate had offered Gilanpasa (the permissible foods and drinks for Bhikkus) to Siridhamma Thera in good faith, in a country where a foremost place has been given to Buddhism in the constitution. He said the lawyers would continuously protest if any attempt was made against the Magistrate.

The Lawyers Association of Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court staged this protest under the theme of ‘Hands off the Independence of the Judiciary’.
