Literacy rate of grade three children dropped alarmingly: Edu. Minister

The literacy among grade three children in Sri Lanka had dropped alarmingly due to COVID pandemic, Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha told Parliament today.

"The Litracy rate of grade three children has been found to be as low as 14% as per a survey conducted recently," the minister said.

He said the main reason for this was the crash in the education system during the pandemic.

The minister said numeracy knowledge among children had also been found drastically low.

Also he said the country's education system is entering into a crisis situation, as there as nearly 4000 schools are functioning without principals. I received a phone call from the education director of South who told me that there are protests in schools in the Sourthen province because of the shortage of teachers and school principals. Some have filed petitions in courts challenging the appointments and those cases are pending. We cannot appoint principals and teachers until the cases are over. Some MPs who are lawyers by profession appearing for the petitioners," the minister said.

MP Dayasiri Jayasekara who responded said MPs have the right to appear on behalf of anyone as long as they practice as legal professionals.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
