Health authorities say a lockdown has not been completely ruled out and appropriate steps will be taken when required. Government sources said that a brief lockdown and other restrictions are being considered to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Sources said that a final decision will be taken following a thorough review of the situation.
Last Friday it was decided to revise some of the restrictions on weddings and funerals and not enforce a lockdown.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director-general of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said that enforcing a lockdown is among the options available.
He said that appropriate measures will be taken after consultations between the authorities.
“This is a matter that is being discussed. Closing the country is only one option. What option to go for is decided after looking at several factors,” he said.
There have been requests to enforce a lockdown to control the rapid rise in the number of people infected by the coronavirus.
However, the government has been reluctant to enforce a lockdown fearing the negative impact it will have on the economy. (EASWARAN RUTNAM)
