The founder of Dilmah Tea, Merrill J. Fernando has passed away at the age of 93, the family confirmed.

Fernando was the founder and former CEO of the Sri Lankan tea company Dilmah.

Fernando stood down as CEO of Dilmah in 2019 and was succeeded by his son Dilhan Fernando.

Merrill Fernando was born in May 1930 in Pallansena, Negombo.

He was one of the first batch of six students recruited for training as tea tasters.
