Minister says police have no vehicles to nab criminals, some OICs travel in trishaws

Many Police stations do not have vehicles in order to perform their duties, Public Security Minister Tiran Alles said.

The Minister made these observations following the handing over of 125 vehicles by the Indian government to Sri Lanka.

“Many Police stations don’t have vehicles to nab thieves and drug addicts. Some OICs travel in trishaws, therefore we are thankful to the Indian government,” he said.

Nothing new. Once many years ago I called the Welikada police station for an threat to us by gangsters who entered our garden in search of someone they were hunting for whom they assumed was one of us! I was told by the police that they can't come because their "jeep" is on "patrol" and they have only one jeep. Not sure why they couldn't radio the patrolling team. We were all women at home. After intimidating us and the gang went away. Police never came even later to follow up on the call. No jeep then and no jeep now. Consistent failure to fund the police and ensure the law enforcement is supported and protected as are citizen's. Oka thamai kathandarey.

All bullshit. These Policemen are incompetent and criminal to the core. Everyday, they want to make a deal and earn pocket money but not serve the citizens. Basically they are monkeys given a uniform and authority so the obvious abuse happens.

Then why do we see so many Police vehicles used by high ranking officers and driven by uniformed police drivers in front of schools and supermarkets being used by their wives and families ? Same for ALL military families - thousands of government vehicles are being used for personal use and as back up vehicles - this is why normal police officers do not have enough vehicles to do police work !!

Please get back all looted public money from all politicians...who ruined this country? Is it innocent public ? Is it business community? Is it intellectual community? It was in the news the Indian HC handed over 125 vehicles to the Sri Lanka police a few days ago. Maybe these are for the personal use of the police officers. The government provided the police with 2000 three wheelers. With all these resources why can’t the police do a better job? They are simply incompetent.
