Sri Lanka Tourism Ministry to launch a tourism mobile app from March 1 for the benefit and provide protection to tourists and to save them from the nefarious activities by three wheeler drivers, Tourism Minister Harin Fernando said.

Addressing an event he said this particular app is one of the best mobile applications used in the tourism industry in other countries. This app can be operated in seven different languages.

"The mobile app will register all three-wheelers and a bar code will be displayed on the vehicle for foreign tourists to scan," he said.

A 24-hour active call centre will record every communication and store them in the app's database.

The Police will have the facility to monitor the app and take appropriate action in the event of any suspicious or unpleasant incidents, he said

With the introduction of the new app, a new chapter will be opened in the tourism industry in the country.

With a view to enhance the country's tourism industry and the facilities provided to upgrade it, this app will play a key role in the future. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

very good move. need 24 call center - Uncertainty means Hugh cost - you can eliminate undercity and fear by connecting tourist 24 hrs with real-time App where police monitoring- Also, add emergency communication polls in Yale and other areas where you do not find phone facility or coverage , event of emergency tourist can press the button to call some one - No dialing just pressing the button - operator knows where this call generated - specially sites forest areas

Also, please respect tourists as human beings. They are not walking dollars. Some tourists are actually students who've saved up money to visit Sri Lanka. Most Sri Lankans have this perception that money grows on trees for western tourists. When I first visited Sri Lanka in 2006, I was trying to catch a three wheeler to travel from Galle Face to Kolpity and the driver asked for 1200 rupees when it was actually around 50 rupees for locals. Similar things happened everytime I visited SL.

The app alone will not help. Start with creating a conducive environment where tourists feel welcome and secure. Make the country tourist-friendly. Do not exploit the tourists by charging them exorbitant entry fees at entry points at various places such as Zoological gardens, Wild Life parks etc.

Good move three wheels drivers are among the worse public transport there money hungry crooks and up to all the dealings wheelings drugs prostitution criminals only very few are decent if government bring proper guidelines procedures for drivers using three wheels for transport then issue a government provide miter with GPS etc.the government must benifits from tax income training monitoring system to protect all any unexpectable event that have couse harm to customers the license should be cancelled to carry passengers for a period or cancelled permanently..to carry passengers you must have a license given by the government gradually in every public transport category govment will improve drivers behavior with key points in place driver passenger safty procedures manual by implimentig compulsory mooving forward

Not going to work. Sri Lanka needs to completely reform the way it treats tourists. Same price for foreigners and locals. I don't mind paying $30 to enter Sirigiya as long as locals pay that too. The constant harassment by tuktuk drivers, assorted scammers and touts has got to stop. There should be no need for someone with a full driving license to go into Colombo to get a SL license before hiring a vehicle. Stop ripping tourists off then you might get more visitors.

The fact that Sri Lanka needs an app to "protect" visitors is a bad sign and shows the depths to which we have sunk to as a country and people.
