No impartial inquiry on attack on ’GotaGoGama' protesters: Vijitha

Expressing its displeasure, the National People's Power (NPP) criticised the government for not having implemented the law against the perpetrators behind the attack on peaceful protesters outside Temple Trees and at "GotaGoGama" on May 9.

The NPP also urged the government and the IGP to conduct an impartial inquiry into the incident.

NPP MP Vijitha Herath told a news conference that if the government acted partially, it would have resulted in the escalation of people's anger.

He said even though the police had arrested about 230 people connected to the incidents after May 9, only one person has been arrested so far in connection with the attack on the peaceful protesters.

"If justice is not meted out to the victims, people might rise against it. People will never accept the moves to protect those involved in the attack. We urge the government to arrest everyone including the mastermind behind the attack while conducting reasonable investigation into other incidents occurred after May 9," he said.

He alleged that the police had allowed the violent groups to enter the Galle Face protesting site intentionally on the orders of the Defense Secretary whereas the police could have prevented them.

He said justice could not be expected by handing over the investigations to police team headed by Western Province DIG Deshabandu Thennakoon and the CID and added that a transparent investigation should be conducted. (Ajith Siriwardana)
