Over 100mm rain forecast today: Met. Dept.



Heavy rains exceeding 100 mm could be expected today in Western, Central, North-Western, and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, the Meteorology Department said.

They said thundershowers could be expected in the Western, Southern, North-Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Eastern provinces. 

Light showers could also be expected over the island during the afternoon or night, the department said.

However, overcast conditions could prevail in most parts of the island due to the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of the country.

The public is advised to take adequate preventive measures to safeguard themselves from damage caused by gusty winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota will be fairly rough. The possibility of sudden high tides associated with a sudden increase in wind speeds in the sea area from Beruwala to Batticaloa via Galle, Hambantota and Pottuvil.

Therefore, the naval and fishing communities are advised to be vigilant of this turbulent weather conditions. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
