PHIs point out hiccups in vaccination drive

The Public Health Inspectors Union (PHIU) today underlined several issues that they have observed in administering vaccines as protection against COVID-19, especially to 20-29 age group.

The PHIU Head Upul Rohana said some students expecting to join local and overseas universities present with written requests and other relevant documents to get them vaccinated with the relevant vaccines.

“In addition, there are some individuals who approach vaccination centres and MOH offices expecting to get the vaccines recommended by the respective foreign countries that they are hoping to fly in future.

“There is no point in coming to us expecting the desired vaccines as we have not been instructed to do so, neither we can give those prescribed vaccines because we only have the vaccines supplied to a particular vaccination centre,” he pointed out.

Thus, the PHIU Head requested the authorities to make arrangements to address these issues immediately. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

As a Geriatric Income Tax Payer since 1975, Why cannot I decide on which Vaccine I should Take? After all, I have NOT been a receiver of any Duty Free Import Permits although I have been a regular Income Tax Payer for last 45 years!

No country in the world offers a choice of vaccine. You have to take what is available at the vaccination station at that time. This is true everywhere, every country. If you have a visa (or "influence" or "pull") or willing to travel to Kandy or Hambantota) , then you may be able to get one of the so-called "good" vaccines (Moderna, Pfizer) - we all know of Colombo-types who have done this What you cannot do is say 'I might go abroad sometime in the future' so I want Pfizer now. You either take what is available or refuse the vaccine and take your chances with COVID and also risk the people around you. Simple Choice. Take it or Leave it.
