PNB officers arrested over death of VTA Assistant Manager in custody



The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested seven Police Narcotics Bureau officers over the death of an Assistant Manager of the Vocational Training Authority (VTA), Narahenpita while in the custody of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB).

The Assistant Manager had died due to gunshot injuries after being admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo following an incident with the police on January 10, this year.

Earlier, Police said the 41-year-old suspect was arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau with nearly 15 grams of heroin in the Narahenpita area.

It was earlier reported that the suspect, a resident of Hikkaduwa, was admitted to the hospital due to wounds following an escape attempt in Maradana.

The CID has launched an investigation into the incident. 

The Maligakanda Magistrate's Court ruled on June 06 that the cause of death of the assistant manager was due to assault.

Accordingly, the magistrate  ordered the arrest the officers involved in this incident and for then to be produced before courts.

Accordingly 07 police officers including a Sub-Inspector of the Police Narcotics Bureau have been arrested over the death of the  suspect. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
