Pear cultivators in Nuwara Eliya and Ragala areas have been left without a remunerative market for their produce, much to their anxiety.

They said they have a bumper harvest this year, but they were incurring heavy losses due to the poor prices. They pointed out that they were not in a position to meet the production costs with the poor price of Rs. 700 a kilo they receive from middlemen.

The farmers expressed concern that middlemen and traders were making heavy profits by selling pears for prices between Rs.1,600 and 2,000 a kilo.

Currently you can get top quality pears with 200g in Germany for Rs 1000/kg included VAT. Why do Sri Lankan farmers want between Rs 1600 and 2000/kg for pears of much lower quality and far less weight.

these cultivators increased the prices for an unimaginary amount when ppl badly wanted to buy those for their children...now a days children even hate anything that is expensive milk powder and chicken etc...keep the fair price keep growing keep profitable...

There are so much unnecessary farming happening here, when the same product can be imported at a lessor price and at higher quality. Too much of the poverty of this country is with encouraging farming. Any country that has to move forward in the 21st Century has to leave behind farming for majority have have like Western nations where only the smallest minority of the population does it. Not even any middle income countries can afford to have large part of their populations farming.

While you may get a lower price per kg. You should have got a bigger harvest to compensate. That's how economics work.

Import substitution is another way of preserving the valuable $ reserves. Increase taxation heavily on imported fruits when local production is released to the market. It's the botched up policies of all governments that led to bankruptcy. Not everything that is comparatively cheap should be imported.

In Australia one can get quality pears for A$1.99 - $2.99 a kilo and towards the end prices reduce to$0.99 cents a kilo. Doesn't make sense for farmers to grow crops with a high production cost, as there are wayyyyyyy more basics that the MASSES desperately need and pears are not even on thier minds. BAD choice, try planting a crop you know is in demand, cheap production costs and this way you will make a profit. Time some of our Farmers were educated to grow what is in demand and local.
