A pedestrian died after he was knocked down by Puttalam District Muslim Congress Parliamentarian Ali Sabri’s motorcar at Mampuri on Palavi – Kalpitiya road on Wednesday night.

The victim died on admission to Puttalam base hospital.

Norochcholai police said the parliamentarian was on board the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The deceased Simion Benedict Dickson (46) was a resident of Manthivu in Puttalam.

Investigations revealed that while the victim was crossing the road, the  MP’s motorcar knocked him. Police said the car was driven at excessive speed at the time of the accident. It was due to the haphazard driving the pedestrian was knocked to death. The driver was taken into custody pending further investigations.

Although the accident took place within the Norochcholai police jurisdiction, the Puttalam SSP Division handed over the investigations to Puttalam police in view of the prevailing situation. (Jude Samantha)
