Police to increase security, night patrols near Colombo, J’pura, Kelaniya Universities

Public Security Minister Tiran Alles instructed IGP C.D. Wickremeratne to tighten security near the universities of Colombo, Sri Jayawardenepura and Kelaniya and also to increase night patrolling, following requests by the respective Vice-Chancellors.

The order was issued after a group of professors including the vice-chancellors of Colombo University, Sri Jayawardenepura University and Kelaniya University participated in separate discussions with the Minister recently. 

IGP Wickremeratne and Western Provincial Senior DIG Deshabandhu Thennakoon participated at the meeting.

During the meeting, the minister inquired about the current security situation of the students of the universities.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Senior Lecturer H.D. Karunaratne requested to strengthen security near the students’ hostels.
Accordingly, the Minister ordered the Inspector General of Police to increase night patrolling near the University of Colombo. 

The Vice-Chancellor also said there has been an increase in thefts in the university. The Minister and the IGP then pointed out to the officials on the measures to be taken to ensure security in the university.

Meanwhile, during the meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of Sri Jayawardenepura University Upul Subhasinghe, the minister ordered to increase the number of security patrols near the university after the Vice-Chancellor requested the minister to increase the security near the Jayawardenepura female students' hostels.

Minister Alles and high ranking police officers held a discussion with a group of professors including the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya Nilanthi De Silva, where attention was also drawn to tighten security near the female students' hostels of Kelaniya University after the Vice-Chancellor had mentioned that there is an increase in the number of thefts within the University.

When the minister inquired about drugs usage by the students, the Vice-Chancellor claimed that the use of ICE narcotics has been eradicated from the university.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
