India - Sri Lanka grid connectivity agreement is to be signed ahead of President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to New Delhi, next month, Daily Mirror learns.

The president will undertake an official visit to India on July 20 for three days. This is his first visit to India after assuming office last year.

The proposed grid connectivity is a major step in bilateral relations. Earlier, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said the national grids of the two countries would be connected by 2030.

Daily Mirror learns that the agreement will be signed in this regard ahead of the president’s visit. India has already sought to invest in the energy sector.

India extended US $ 4 billion in assistance during the economic crisis in terms of currency swaps, deferment of payments and credit lines to purchase fuel and essentials. (Kelum Bandara)

Why not build two or three coal 4000MW coal power plants and keep our energy independence for several decades? what happens if India cuts off power until Sri Lanka agree to its terms in a dispute? don't depend our energy security on India.

Very good proposal from the government but we have yet to see how and when it will be implemented. Power networks in most of the European countries are interconnected and all those countries are reaping its benefit

Gunadasa - you must be out of your mind. All Europeans, Ranil, and Colombo crowd are likeminded. they can share things. they have the same ancestors. Sri Lanka and India is not the same. you dont want to tangled with a country that have dubious interests towards Sri Lanka like forcing 13 amendment

This is a good opportunity for Sri Lanka to sell electricity to India. Every thinks that we are doing this to buy electricity from India. Its for other way around. India is a different country compared to 1980's. 5th largest economy in the world. They got it right. So nothing wrong following them.
