Proposal to get MBBS degree at the age of 22: Dr. Kolabage

A proposal has already been made to create a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and become a fully qualified doctor by the time the person turns 22 years of age, Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) General Committee Member Dr. Prasad Kolabage said.

While addressing the media yesterday, he said the methodology and strategies required to create a doctor for society have been formulated.

The internship period used to create a doctor in our country is unfortunately pretty long, and he said at least 29 years one has to wait to become a fully qualified doctor.

Students finish their school education in their twenties and, unfortunately, have to wait another 12 years to offer their service as doctors, Dr. Kolabage said.

"Due to the current unfortunate situation, people have not been able to receive the services of a doctor. "Five years of idleness, despite being able to work as a doctor, is a very unfortunate situation," he said.

Therefore, Dr. Kolabage said the Higher Education Ministry and the Medical Council should pay stern attention to this issue and to our proposal.  (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
