President Ranil Wickremesinghe has convened an all-party conference next week (26) where he is set to take a decision on the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, Minister Jeevan Thondaman said.
He told reporters after his return from India that a delegation headed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe discussed matters concerning the upcountry Tamil community including the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and that discussions ended on a positive note.
"I was a part of the delegation to India headed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. During the bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, implementation of the 13th Amendment, MoUs on energy and economic development, and development of the Indian-origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka were discussed," he said.
He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to grant Rs. 3000 million for the betterment of the Indian-orgin Tamil community in Sri Lanka and added that steps would be taken to utilize these funds for the upliftment of education and the health sector for the upcountry Tamils.
The Minister also said work on the proposed university in the Nuwara Eliya district would be expedited with the Indian funds. (Ajith Siriwardana)
