SJB member elected Kurunegala mayor

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) member Sumedha Arunashantha was elected as the mayor of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led Kurunegala Municipal Council with majority votes at a vote taken today.

The SJB members and SLPP member Gamini Peramunage voted for him. He received ten votes while his rival candidate Wijeyananda Wedisinha (SLPP) received six votes.
SLPP Members Ranjith Jayawardene , Bandu Jayasekara and UNP Member Buddhika Ellepola refrained from voting.

The post of mayor had fallen vacant after former Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana was removed from the post for failing to have the budget passed in council.

In 2018, there was no SJB. So, a UNP candidate had crossed over to SJB.

Seems like SLPP is now voting for SJB to come to power. Looks like they are scared that NPP will come to power and put them out of business.
