SL’s first Potato Chips factory production trials successful



The production trial of Sri Lanka's first Potato Chips factory has been a great success, Agriculture Ministry said.

They said the project was jointly initiated by the Agriculture Ministry's Small Scale Agri-business Participation Program (SAPP) and the Janatha Govi Samagama, Bandarawela.  

The Minister mentioned that Potato Chips, which has been built at a cost of Rs.100 million, is a project that is being implemented with the aim of bringing potatoes to the market as a value-added product in this country.

Potato Chips are imported by some food processing companies in Sri Lanka and the amount spent on it in the year 2021 was Rs.21 billion. Potato Chips are currently being exported to several countries by the private sector. 

According to 2021 data, a ton of potato chips produced in this country has been sold at US$ 6,321.

The products of the Kahattewela Potato Chips factory to be used to export to foreign markets as well as to cater the needs of this country.

This factory has the capacity to process 1,000kg of Potato Chips per day. Also arrangements have been made to buy the products of 200 potato farmers to this factory.

The Minister also instructed the Agrarian Development Department to spend the money allocated for the development of agricultural roads this year and take steps to rehabilitate the access roads as there are not enough road facilities in the potato cultivation area of Welimada Boralanda, where potatoes are grown extensively.
