Whilst stating that there are signs that a black era will dawn for the local media, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene today said Sri Lanka will have to face certain questions at the next UNHRC sessions in Geneva on the harassment of journalists and civil activists.
“ The attack on the house of journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama and the arrest of civilian activist Shehan Malaka will be taken up by interested parties at the next UNHRC sessions and Sri Lanka will have to respond,” Mr. Wijewardene said.
“ It is evident that there is only a law of the jungle prevailing in the nation when armed men go to a house of a journalist and attack. Incidents with regard to Chamuditha Samarawickrama and the arrest of Shehan Malaka will result in Sri Lanka becoming known as a nation without democracy. No investors will come when such a signal is sent across the world and no country will assist Sri Lanka. We need foreign investors and assistance from other countries to resolve the FOREX issue,” he added.
“We also like to inform the police and the public servants not to violate the rights of the people. It is the police and the public servants who will fall into difficulty if those whose rights are violated file action,” he stressed.
He therefore urged all forces to get together to safeguard the freedom of expression. Wijewardene added that his party is committed to this cause.(Yohan Perera)
