Veterinary officials claimed that there is a serious threat to the lives of female dogs due to the use of the progesterone vaccine by certain Veterinarians for dog sterilization operations, Dr.Chamith Nanayakkara, advisor to the board of the Association of Veterinarians for Humane Management of Animal Population said.
He told the Daily Mirror that he believes that the drugs used in the chemical sterilization of dogs should never be used.
Stray dogs on the streets are nothing new in Sri Lanka, where the stray dog population has been controlled to prevent the spread of rabies, he said.
Dr. Nanayakkara said that after the female dogs are vaccinated with the progesterone drugs, they face a lot of complications. The dog's womb begins to rot, and the animal might suffer a slow death.
“Even in the United States and other countries, there is sufficient research to prove that the progesterone vaccine even causes a lot of problems for the human body. In the USA, the progesterone vaccine has been banned due to its side effects,” Dr. Nanayakkara said.
“95 percent of the veterinarians are against the use of this progesterone vaccine for sterilizations, and we recommend continuing with the surgical sterilization to control the stray dog population,” he said.
“It was reported that most of the non-veterinarians used this vaccine in the field for easy sterilizations of dogs. If the vaccine was given to a pregnant female dog, the puppies in the womb will die,” he said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
