Survey finds majority believe Aragalaya failed to fulfill people’s aspirations

A recent survey conducted by Verité Research has revealed that about 60% of the Sri Lankan public does not believe that the Aragalaya movement succeeded in fulfilling the wishes and aspirations of the people. 

The study also highlights that 51% of respondents feel that addressing issues of governance and corruption is crucial to rebuilding the nation, one year after the Aragalaya protestors vacated Galle Face Green on August 10, 2022.

The Aragalaya protest movement held at the Galle Face, Colombo from April 9, 2022, to August 10, 2022 is believed have made a significant impact on the counrty’s politics.

During this period, notable events such as the appointment of a new Prime Minister and cabinet of ministers, as well as the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, took place.

Regarding the question of whether the Aragalaya movement fulfilled the wishes and aspirations of the people, 60% of the respondents answered mostly no, while 11% responded mostly yes. 

A remaining 29% expressed no opinion on the matter.

The survey further explored the respondents' opinions on the most pressing issues that need attention in order to rebuild the country.

When asked to endorse the statement that resonated with them the most, 51% of the participants emphasized the need to fix corrupt and bad governance. 34% believed that a change in the economic system was necessary, while 15% considered giving priority to stability over democratic space as the key factor.

The survey was conducted as part of the syndicated survey instrument by Verité Research, in collaboration with polling partner Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd. 

This instrument allows other organizations to gauge the sentiments of the Sri Lankan public. The sample and methodology were designed to limit the maximum error margin to under ±3% at a 95% confidence interval. The poll gathered responses from 1,008 Sri Lankan adults across the country in June 2023.
